A win for wellbeing and wild camping

We are delighted that the supreme court has upheld the right for everyone to wild camp responsibly on Dartmoor (Report, 21 May). Wild camping is a unique and memorable experience that can bring a thrill of solitude, independence and adventure that many people can’t get in their day-to-day lives.

For generations, young people have been camping on Dartmoor as part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. For those struggling with cost of living and mental health crises, protecting and widening access to our beautiful countryside – with all the freedom and mental and physical benefits it can bring – is absolutely essential. Now is the time to protect their right to explore the great outdoors and get off the beaten track, and we are pleased that the supreme court has done so.
