Former Warrior DeMarcus Cousins is sought for arrest by the Mobile Police Department in Alabama on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, according to A.J. Perez of USA Today.
On Monday, Cousins’ ex-girlfriend, filed a report with the Mobile police alleging that Cousins had threatened her with deadly violence. The same day, an audio recording was published by TMZ in which a man, purported to be Cousins, threatens violence involving a firearm during a phone call after the ex would not give permission for their son to attend is wedding.
Cousins was married over the weekend in Atlanta, to Morgan Lang. Among the Warriors to attend, past and present, were Matt Barnes, Quinn Cook, Draymond Green, Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.
Cousins signed with the Los Angeles Lakers during free agency, where Cook and Anthony Davis (also at the wedding) are teammates. But Cousins is not expected to play during the 2019-20 season after tearing his ACL in an offseason workout on Aug. 12.
As to what happens now, Mobile police hope Cousins turns himself in. Otherwise, defense attorney Mary Kristen Galanos, who is not involved in the case, told USA Today Sports:
They aren’t going (to) send a SWAT team out for him. What usually happens is that the person is picked up on a routine traffic stop.
The charge of misdemeanor domestic violence is “a Class A misdemeanor, meaning Cousins would face a maximum of a year in jail,” according to Perez.
The NBA and Lakers are investigating the allegations — and now charges — against Cousins.
