A wallaby was captured on CCTV hopping down a Neath residential street in the middle of the night

A wallaby was caught on CCTV as it jumped along a quiet street in the middle of the night.

The Australian marsupial was seen lost in Woodlands Park Drive in Cadoxton, Neath at 12.35am on Wednesday morning.

Retired professor, Duncan Lewis, 62, said he and his wife were woken up in the middle of the night by the slamming of a police van door.

Mr Lewis said they thought it was unusual because they live in such a quiet area and checked their CCTV the next morning.

"In the morning my wife checked the CCTV and saw what she at first thought was a kangaroo, though it was too small to be a kangaroo," he said.

"I then had a look and there it was - I was nothing short of gobsmacked."

Mr Lewis watched the footage in amazement as he saw the wallaby hopping in and out of different gardens as a police officer followed it with a torch.

He added: "He or she stopped on the open green to have a sniff and then hopped onto our drive, then into our neighbours garden where the police caught it.

"Everyone in the area is very tickled by it."

South Wales Police confirmed officers captured a wallaby in Cadoxton and returned it to its owner.

An RSPCA Cymru spokesperson said: “This was certainly unusual CCTV footage to see - but we're glad to hear the owner of this wallaby has now been found.

“We were always under the impression this footage was showing an escaped pet. While there are some established populations of wallabies in the wild in the UK - a product of both deliberate releases and accidental escapes from captivity; none are understood to exist in Wales.

“Wallabies are sometimes kept as pets - but as non-native species, it is really important to ensure that an appropriate set-up both meets their needs and does not allow them to escape.”
