'A wall of silence' - We ask why no-one wants to help crisis-hit Notts County in club's darkest hour

The people whose job it is to look after the good reputation of English football appear to have turned their back on crisis-hit Notts County in its hour of need.

So today - on behalf of fans of the oldest professional football club in the world - the Post asks: "Why is there a wall of silence?"

This week, Lilian Greenwood MP told the Prime Minister that Notts face the “real threat” of extinction.

Staff and players have not been paid since the end of June. The club has millions of pounds of debts.

It is only through the goodwill of supporters, the community and other fund-raising organisations that long-suffering club staff have been able to put food on their tables.

On the pitch, manager Neal Ardley cannot sign players because of a transfer embargo - despite the season starting in just two weeks’ time.

There has never been a deeper crisis in the club’s long and illustrious history. Yet the guardians of the beautiful game are nowhere to be seen.

The fans have asked. The Post has asked. Our MP has asked. But no-one from the management of English football wants to help.

The footballing authorities are fond of saying that - in times of crisis -  they will always act in the best interests of supporters.

Well... crises don't come much bigger than this. And, on the day of the first pre-season friendly at Meadow Lane, Notts fans are still waiting for the FA, the National League and the Football League to step in.
