A vegan restaurant serving burgers and fried 'chicken' is opening in Withington

One of Manchester's most popular street food operators is branching out to open its first restaurant in the coming months.

The fully vegan Herbivorous has secured a site in the heart of Withington, where it can serve its plant-based burgers and fried 'chicken'.

The business is already well-known from its pop-up at Ancoats General Store, its residency at Hatch, and its travels on the festival circuit.

The pair behind the venture say they 'can't wait' to open their doors on Wilmslow Road this September.

This will be their first bricks-and-mortar site, and will be a haven of ethically sourced, sustainable comfort food that's completely free of meat and animal products.

Their most popular dishes include the Big Kahuna Burger, a beef-style patty marinated in teriyaki sauce, then topped with melted cheese, grilled pineapple, seitan 'bacon' and a spicy coriander mayo, and their seitan fried 'chicken' served in a brioche bun.

In their new site, they'll work with local distilleries and breweries to create a menu of vegan cocktails, wines and beers.

The new large kitchen will also allow them to expand on and develop their menu, including launching their first brunch offering.

The site will also be home to vegan cooking masterclasses, where guests can learn to make seitan, vegan mayos and plant-based burgers.

Fellow Manchester independent Drizzle City Bakes will supply desserts.

The unit itself - formerly a gift shop - has been given a festival-style makeover.

Robyn Marsh, founder of Herbivorous said: "We’re so excited to be opening our first bricks and mortar restaurant in this vibrant part of south Manchester.

"The Withington restaurant will be the next evolution of Herbivorous, bringing together everything that has influenced us over the last four years, and the time we’ve spent building the brand.

"Working with other local independents is something we are really looking forward to as there are so many wonderful and talented brands locally who we would love to collaborate with.

"Our team are so passionate about crafting our house-made products, dishes and meat alternatives, we can’t wait to open our doors in this fantastic neighbourhood and share our food with everyone."

The new Herbivorous is set to open this September at 445 Wilmslow Road.
