A vanished railway station that once served the West End of Newcastle

This was Scotswood railway station in the mid-1960s. Look for it today and there’s little trace of it.

It sat just South of the junction of Whitfield Road and Roberts Street in the West End of Newcastle.

Despite having platforms serving different lines, it was regarded as one station. The Southern platform served the Newcastle to Carlisle line. The Northern platform was on the North Wylam route.

The station suffered an early mishap when the buildings burned down in 1879 - but it was rebuilt and up and running again within a year.

In the early decades, Scotswood station was busy with passengers, many of whom were workers in the area’s teeming shipyards and factories.

But as the 20th century progressed, trains here - as elsewhere - lost passengers to buses.

In 1963 the Beeching report recommended closure of 13 stations between Newcastle and Carlisle, including Scotswood. The station was closed in 1967 and later demolished.
