A van driver came to the rescue of a bare-chested man being chased down the middle of the road by carjackers

Detectives are appealing for information after a van driver rescued a bare-chested man being chased down the street by carjackers.

Police say the man, 35, was running 'in and out of traffic' after being attacked as he got out of his car on Linby Street in Hulme.

During the struggle his shirt was ripped off, but he managed to escape and ran off along Chorlton Road with the gang in pursuit.

He tried flag down passing cars, eventually stopping a Transit van driver who helped him escape.

Police are now appealing for witnesses following the attempted robbery, which took place at around 8.10pm on Monday, September 28.

Detectives believe the men were attempting to steal the victim’s car.

He received minor injuries which did not require hospital treatment, but was left 'shaken' by the attack.

No arrests have been made and enquiries remain ongoing.

Det Con Anthony Calvert, of GMP’s Operation Valiant team, said: "This was a particularly distressing incident in which the men continued to pursue the victim even after he managed to get away from them as they attempted to steal his car.

"The victim’s shirt was torn off during this struggle so he was shirtless as he ran onto Chorlton Road. I am confident there are a number of people who may have witnessed this incident as we know the traffic on Chorlton Road was particularly busy at this time.

"If anyone was in the area at the time and witnessed this incident please get in touch with police.

"We would also be interested in hearing from anyone who may have had dash cam or mobile phone footage."

Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 6123, quoting incident number 2699 of 28/09/2020 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
