‘A true warrior’ - Arsenal players break their silence after Laurent Koscielny’s shock transfer

The curse of the Arsenal captain continues as one again the Gunners have lost their skipper with the club confirming on Tuesday that Laurent Koscielny has left the club to join Bordeaux.

After nine years in north London, Koscielny burned much of the goodwill he had built up among the Arsenal faithful by forcing through a move to France.

The 33-year-old refused to go on the club’s summer tour of the USA and reportedly told Unai Emery he did not intend to play for Arsenal ever again.

After his move to Ligue 1 was confirmed, Koscielny posted a message to Arsenal supporters on Instagram, saying:

“As you know I engaged with [Bordeaux]. After 9 years spent at Arsenal, I took the decision to leave. I have spent wonderful years with this club, nine years during which I learned, evolved, grew up.

“This experience made me the player I am today. My decision to leave has been discussed for months with my club, my teammates, my coach, and it has been a well thought decision.

I see this departure like a new turning point in my life as a player but also in in my life as a man and a family man.

“However I hope you understand, and in any case I cannot be thankful enough for these years past at Arsenal. I am aware of everything that the club and you supporters have brought to me. But it is time for me to go home so today my will is to join [Bordeaux]. This is a new challenge that I count on taking with determination.”

While the response from fans has been, at best, mixed, his teammates have all been positive in what they have said about him publicly.

Although many Arsenal players have chosen not to acknowledge Koscielny’s departure, a few have shared messages of good luck.

Last season’s centre-back partner Sokratis said: “It was a privilege to play with you Lolo. A true warrior and Arsenal legend!”

His likely replacement in the centre of Arsenal’s defence for the start of this season, Calum Chambers, said it was “an absolute pleasure to be able to play and learn from this guy. Wish you all the best.”

Long-time defensive teammate Nacho Monreal said: “It has been a pleasure to play with you these years. I have learned a lot from you. I can only wish you the best in your new stage.”

Meanwhile, fellow Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette wrote: “Thanks Captain , it’s been a pleasure and an honor to play 2 years alongside you #respect”

Similarly, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang said: “Proud to have played with you @koscielny_official6 respect!!”
