'A true gent' - Praise for kind Lothian Buses driver who goes above and beyond

A kind Lothian Buses driver who goes out of his way to help passengers has been showered with praise on social media.

The driver, named as Michael Richie, works on the number 30 route between Clovenstone and Musselburgh.

He regularly lends a hand to passengers who need extra assistance - carrying shopping bags for elderly people or buying sweets for those with special needs.

Ailie Mcintosh posted on Facebook saying Michael "deserved a medal" for his helpful behaviour this week, and her post has since been shared more than a thousand times.

Hundreds have left comments supporting her, with many saying the driver is "a true gent."

Ailie said: "Shoutout to the bus driver driving the 30 I got on at 12:00 in Musselburgh who went well out of his job description, ️buying a passenger with special needs sweets talking & trying to calm them down on his break, getting off the bus at stops helping the elderly onto the bus and carrying their shopping for them to their seats, asking people on the bus if they are too cold and wanting the heating put on."

She continued: "Honestly Lothian Buses need more people like you, you deserve a medal."

'Not all heroes wear capes'

Ailie told Edinburgh Live she hadn't expected her post to reach as many people as it did and she was glad to see him getting the recognition he deserved.

Others shared their experiences of his bus route, with one saying: "I regularly have him driving me home on the 30 and he is amazing always goes that little bit extra for everyone."

Another said: "I was on his bus today. An absolute gem. Carried my shopping for me too. Incredible man, who says he loves working and he's loving life. You're one in a million Michael."

One passenger commented: "I was on his bus last week and he was so kind.

"Helping people on and off with shopping and buggy interacting with people, was really great to see need more driver like him!"

Another simply said: "Not all heroes wear capes!!"

Many said Michael should be recognised by the bus company for his kind acts.

Lothian Buses shared Ailie's post saying "Well done this driver. What a star."
