The Chicago Teachers Union is ready to strike Thursday if it doesn’t reach a deal with Chicago Public Schools and Mayor Lori Lightfoot by midnight Wednesday.
A strike from the 25,000-strong teachers union would cause the cancellation of classes for 300,000 CPS students.
Though Friday’s negotiations were combative, by Saturday both sides agreed that they had made significant progress. After Monday’s bargaining session, Lightfoot and CPS CEO Janice Jackson said the city and school district “expressed a willingness” to work toward agreeable solutions on staffing and class size — the two biggest remaining issues in negotiations.
If a deal isn’t reached by Wednesday night, CTU’s house of delegates will be asked to vote on whatever’s on the table, which could lead to a strike Thursday morning.
