A THIRD of millennials worry their parents will be scammed online, survey reveals

A third of millennials worry that their parents will be scammed online, a new survey has revealed.

The survey, by Kaspersky, asked 2,000 Brits about their views on technology and its effect on the family unit.

The results revealed that almost two-thirds (64%) of tech-savvy millennials feel that it’s their duty to provide tech support to older relatives.

However, this duty can put a strain on relationships, with 42% of millennials admitting that they avoid family members if they think they want tech support.

David Emm, Principal Security Researchers at Kaspersky, said: “Whilst the intention of the older generation to protect themselves without external support may be there, the knowledge base simply isn’t.

“Because it is a subject area they are unfamiliar with, plus with plenty of negative media commentary stoking the fire of fear, they want someone they can trust.

“Whilst many millennials find the constant requests frustrating, most feel obliged to continue to provide tech support to family member.”

The survey also revealed that 31% of millennials are worried about their parents being scammed online, due to a lack of technology knowledge.

Kathleen Saxton, a psychotherapist, explained: “The dramatic rise of technology within our cars, offices and social environments has challenged all generations to continually learn how to benefit from them.

“Those in the second half of their lives can find the changes overwhelming and often fear being duped, exposed or targeted via them – and it is often millennials who are forced to come to the rescue.”

Based on the findings, Kaspersky has created a series of guides aimed at empowering the older generation - they can be accessed here.
