A test of courage for Chaba Kaew

Thailand forwards Kanjana Sungngoen (left) and Suchawadee Nildhamrong take part in a training session.

Thailand could not have asked for a tougher task in their Women's World Cup opener as they face the defending champions United States on Tuesday night.

The match in Reims kicks off at 2am (Wednesday morning, Thai time).

The other two teams in Group F are European giants Sweden and South American debutants Chile who meet earlier on Tuesday.

The US are hot favourites to win their fourth world title.

Knowing that they are heavy underdogs, the Chaba Kaew have tried to tighten their defence to handle the Americans' formidable attack.

"Today, we trained for the game against the USA. We practised how to handle the high ball,'' Thailand coach Nuengruethai Sathongwien said after Monday's training session.

She said the US are stronger than Belgium, who beat her team 6-1 in a warm-up game earlier this month.

"Judging from the match against Belgium, we have to move faster," said Nuengruethai, whose team also lost 3-0 to France in a friendly match last month.

Thailand defender Warunee Petchwiset said: "The USA are a good and strong team so we have to try to defend in every department. We cannot make any mistake against the USA.

"Of course, we want to score against the USA and hope to surprise the Americans."

Thailand captain Sunisa Srangthaisong said the Chaba Kaew are inferior to the US in every position.

But she hopes her team's fast counter-attack could stun the world champions.

"It will be a very difficult game for us. We will give our best and in football anything can happen. We may get a goal and I think it will be an exciting match," she said.

Thailand's strike force will be led by veteran Kanjana Sungngoen and US-based Suchawadee Nildhamrong (Miranda Nild).

Suchawadee, 23, said recently that she would try to score against the country where she lives in her first-ever World Cup match.

It is Thailand's second World Cup appearance, having made their debut at the 2015 finals.

At Canada 2015, Thailand suffered two 4-0 defeats against Germany and Norway.

However, they beat Ivory Coast 3-2 and missed out on a place in the second round on goal difference.

With the top two teams in each of six groups plus four best third-place sides advancing to the next round, the Thais aim to reach the knockout stages by beating Chile and hope the results of other groups go their way.

Thailand manager Nualphan Lamsam said the Chaba Kaew are ready for their France 2019 campaign.
