A terraced thriller in Miller Road

When the terraces of Miller Road in Ayr were being built, the last fatal duel on UK soil was in full swing.

Frederic Cournet met his death on a hill near Windsor.

Meanwhile the workies were out in force in Ayr, crafting one of the town’s finest thoroughfares.

This was 1852 and Mrs Nicholson of Barns House had agreed to sell some of her land to the town council.

The burghers had been desperate for a new route between the station and Racecourse Road.

It was named in  honour of Hugh Miller, the then Provost of Ayr.

The Victorian street is now in a conservation area and many of the properties have listed features.

Number 12 is on the town side of the street, near the Burns Statue Square end, so everything is on the doorstep.

And what a doorstep it is, protected by a grand portico.

Town agents Donald Ross Residential say: “This is truly one of the finest bespoke homes offered to the Ayrshire marketplace in recent times.

“The design is irresistibly modern throughout, utilising natural light and open plan living spaces.

“But it  retains all the traditional accommodation that makes this a warm and very welcoming family home.”

A wide hall leads on to the front facing lounge, around 16 feet square, and welcoming woodburner, pictured below.

And at the back the house has been opened to full width for a combined near 24 feet of dining and family room.

The Creative Design kitchen with Neff appliances is in the original single storey building at the rear, and at 22 feet long has room for breakfasting.  A WC completes the ground floor.

There are three bedrooms and a luxurious shower room upstairs.

All rooms have been re-designed by the present over over the past two years.

It will not be for everyone - there is no parking except in the street and the area is mixed commercial.

The private back garden has been landscaped, with block paving for outside dining.
