A temporary coronavirus testing centre is to open in central Rochdale next week

A temporary Covid-19 testing centre is to open in Rochdale next week.

It comes as the number of cases in the borough continues to rise.

Rochdale is approaching 100 cases per 100,000 people, with an infection rate of 90.8.

That's the fourth highest in Greater Manchester.

The testing unit will be open from 10.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Wednesday between 10.30am and 3.30pm on High Street car park, off St Mary’s Gate behind the Dunelm store.

Tests must be booked.

Appointments can be made by ringing 119 or at nhs.uk/coronavirus.

As the Manchester Evening News reported earlier this week people in Rochdale have been stopped from 'dropping in' at the borough’s coronavirus testing centres or using the council’s phoneline to book an appointment.

The local authority has also had permission to test people who do not have symptoms withdrawn.

Coun Sara Rowbotham, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Rochdale Borough Council, said: "Finding positive cases is the best way for us to stop the spread of the virus across our borough.

"Unfortunately central government asked us to close our booking helpline which we had set up to make booking easier for our residents but we urge our residents to keep trying with the online national system."

Other testing centres are located at Rochdale town hall, Heywood civic centre and Market Place car park in Middleton. You must book an appointment and you must have symptoms. These sites are open 8am-8pm, seven days week.
