A teenager has been rescued from the banks of the River Irwell in Salford by firefighters

A teenager was rescued from the banks of the River Irwell in Salford.

The boy, 16, was pulled to safety by firefighters using a ladder at around 7pm tonight.

The fire service said the teen was stuck on a section of the riverbank off New Bridge Street.

A large number of police vehicles and fire engines were seen on Triinity Way as the rescue was carried out.

The boy was pulled to safety and handed over to North West Ambulance Service.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 7pm to New Bridge Street to reports of a person on the riverbank.

"Fire engines from Manchester, a water incident unit from Eccles and a technical response unit from Ashton-under-Lyne attended.

"We rescued him with a ladder and rope equipment and were there for 45 minutes.

"It was a 16-year-old male. He was handed over to the ambulance service."
