'A team like Newcastle United won't come out' - Frank Lampard on what Chelsea failed to do

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea were always susceptible to conceding a last-minute winner against 'well organised' Newcastle United because the visitors did not score a goal.

The Magpies won their first corner of the game deep into stoppage time and while Matt Ritchie's effort was easily headed clear by Willian, the ball fell to Allan Saint-Maximin out on the left.

The Frenchman floated in a teasing cross and Isaac Hayden was there to head home to send Newcastle fans wild on 94 minutes.

Chelsea had 70% possession, 10 corners and 19 shots but Lampard was again left to rue his side's failure to break the deadlock following previous defeats against West Ham, Bournemouth and Southampton.

"We didn't score. I know they had three headers but they didn't really come out in the second half," he told reporters after the game.

"It's been the story of parts of our season. There's been so many great stories of our season and then parts of our season where we control, create and don't score.

"A team like Newcastle won't come out - they're very well organised in what they do - and you're always open to what happened."

While Chelsea had more of the ball and more attempts on goal, the visitors only mustered four shots on target and Martin Dubravka's only save of note was to keep N'Golo Kante out from close range in the first half.

Tammy Abraham, Chelsea's top scorer with 15 goals this season, had two good opportunities in the second half but fired wide from a tight angle after rounding Dubravka on one occasion before later having an effort cleared off the line by Matt Ritchie.

"That can happen. We can't absolutely rely on Tammy. We have to have goals across the frontline," Lampard added. "If we want to bridge the gap upwards, we can't just rely on Tammy.

"Tammy has been fantastic this season and it didn't quite come off for him today, but that's football. I can't complain about anything from the team really.

"Of course, we don't want to give away headers in our box. They're big, that happens, we don't want to do that, but other than that, we gave everything to try and win the game."
