Since 2014, some 1.4 million refugees have arrived in Germany, a large number of them from Iraq and Syria. For many female refugees, building a new life for themselves means achieving independence. For some, leaving behind their homeland and its traditions also means leaving behind their marriage. The social system in Germany gives women in unhappy marriages the courage and the means to move on, as our correspondents report.
