A targetman must be on Notts County's summer shopping list

Mark Stallard would love to see Notts County sign a targetman this summer but says it only makes sense if they play to his strengths.

The Magpies could revamp their forward line during the close season as they prepare for life in the National League with only Kristian Dennis and Kane Hemmings as the club’s most experienced forwards on the books.

Hemmings finished top scorer with 14 goals last season and did an admirable job of leading the line on his own at times with his performance in the 3-1 win over Carlisle standing out in particular.

But ex-Notts forward Stallard, now a Magpies pundit for BBC Radio Nottingham, says a physically imposing forward would undoubtedly be a valuable weapon.

“I would like to see a good old fashioned centre forward next season, somebody who is strong, can hold the ball up and play with his back to goal,” he said.

“In fairness to Kane he did a pretty good job of doing that at times on his own last season when you would say that’s not his natural strength.

“A big centre forward makes sense, but it’s only worth getting one if you are going to play to his strengths.

“If you are going to play a high pressing game with one man up front, then you would suspect that’s not going to be suitable for him.

“So a lot of it depends on how the manager is going to approach next season and the system and style he is going to play.”
