A string of cars have had their licence plates stolen in Swansea suburbs

A string of cars have reportedly had their licence plates stolen in an area which experienced a spate of similar thefts earlier this year.

Owners of vehicles in Cwmbwrla , Manselton , Brynhyfryd and Penlan are said to have had their number plates removed, many fearing they will be used as false plates on vehicles being used to commit crimes.

Places where cars have been targeted include Manor Road, Approach Road and Iowerth Street in Manselton, and the car park of a pub in Brynhyfryd.

One is also believed to have been taken from a street in Penlan.

The thefts come months after at least three licence plates were stolen in the same area over a few weeks in May.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “While many instances of theft are opportunistic, some are linked to criminals who target vehicles for their high value or for the commission of further offences.

“The public is urged to work with South Wales Police to tackle vehicle crime; reporting any suspicious activity in or around houses, garages, carparks or vehicles in streets as soon as possible.”

In May, police confirmed reports of number plates being taken in Gendros and Manselton.

The thefts came shortly after dozens of vehicles had their tyres slashed in a single night - including one belonging to a care home for people with learning disabilities.

But officers investigating the crimes said they did not believe the thefts and the tyres being slashed were connected.

Around 30 cars and vans had their tyres slashed, on Weig Road, Gendros, and Maesglas and Pentregethin roads.

A 14-year-old girl was spoken to by officers following the damage to cars on Manselton Road.

Anyone with information about vehicle crime is also asked to contact 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
