A stolen car somehow ended up on a garage roof after an early hours crash... the dad who owns the house can't believe how lucky he was

A father has spoken about the terrifying moment a stolen car came within feet of smashing through the wall of his home.

Two adults and a child were sleeping inside the house on Bickershaw Lane, Wigan, when they were woken by a sudden 'bang' at 4am on Sunday (October 6).

When they looked outside, they saw a blue Ford Fusion on top of their garage.

Pictures show the damaged vehicle sitting precariously on the roof, above a white van.

The man who lives at the house, who asked not to be named, said: "I was in bed sleeping and I just heard a bang.

"I had no idea what was going on. I came out and there was a car on the side of the house.

"It was about two yards away from the wall, so we were lucky."

The Fusion, which was reported stolen in Leigh on Saturday, landed on the roof after crashing into a number of parked cars on the road.

In the immediate aftermath, the driver fled.

Witnesses said they saw the man being picked up by another vehicle.

A front seat passenger was rescued from the wreckage and was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The road was closed, between the junctions of Warrington Road and Keats Way, for more than five hours.

The impact caused damage to the garage roof, while part of a wall at the side of the house was destroyed.

The black Ford and the white van parked outside the house suffered irreparable damage.

"Both of our vehicles are written off," the owner of the house said.

"There is a launchpad on the grass and it looks like he has catapulted into the car and van and gone up on to the roof.

"If he had not hit the vehicles then he probably would have come through the house.

"He must have been travelling at one heck of a speed.

"This road is used like a racing track. It's putting people's lives at risk."

Abram councillor Martyn Smethurst said he did not believe additional speed calming measures were needed on Bickershaw Lane and called on drivers to be 'responsible' when using the road.

He added: "We are liaising with Greater Manchester Police to find out the contributory factors to the collision to determine any patterns or trends, that may result in targeting road safety engineering, publicity or educational material being used to reduce the likelihood of collisions of a similar nature re-occurring."
