A Steve Bruce favourite is now a free agent - and Newcastle United fans are saying the same thing

Steve Bruce favourite Ahmed Elmohamady is now a free agent having announced his departure from Aston Villa.

The 33-year-old made the announcement on Twitter - and instantly, Newcastle United fans began joking that his next destination will be Tyneside.

It's not as stupid as it sounds when you consider that Bruce has signed the Egyptian defender at three other clubs: Sunderland, Hull City and then Villa in 2017.

Following the return of football last June, it was Elmohamady who came off the bench to score the equaliser in the game against United and Villa - Bruce in his post-match comments joking that he should have 'left him in Egypt.'

"I’ve signed him three times," he said.

"He’s a great pro, a great lad who has served me well over the best part of 10 years.

“He was one of my best ever signings when I was manager down the road, bringing him in for nothing. I think I paid a few quid for him when I took him to Hull, and how often do these things bite you?"

Newcastle though are well stocked for right-backs with Javier Manquillo and Emil Kraft, plus Jacob Murphy currently the first choice in a wing-back role.

Still, if United are on the lookout for a bit of experience and on the cheap - Elmohamaday may fit the bill but given the response by fans on Twitter so far, it wouldn't go down particularly well.
