A spot of tea

One of the things I miss about not being able to dine out is the afternoon teas. I absolutely love the elegance of high tea and all it has to offer. Though that longing may soon be a thing of the past.

From Sept 1, Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok will bring their elegant afternoon tea into your home. Immerse in the flavours of the "greatest hits" afternoon tea with executive pastry chef Franck Istel presenting the new "Afternoon Tea at Kempinski – Flavours of the Greatest", inspired by a selection of all-time favourites of European classic savouries and sweets paired with a choice of coffee or Ronnefeldt tea. Chef Istel has also added a refreshing homemade green apple sorbet and a chocolate musical note for dine-in when it opens.

I always begin with the savoury and make my way to the sweet. The savoury delicacies include the classic Ham and cheese sandwich, Mini chèvre cheesecake and apricot compote, Smashed avocado, quail egg and caviar, Tasmanian smoked salmon canapé and Mini lobster brioche. The heavenly choice of sweet specialities features Strawberry pistachio choux, Blueberry white chocolate Chantilly macaron, Opera cake with espresso coffee cream and chocolate ganache, Passion fruit and strawberry mini cubes, Thai mango chocolate tart, Soft lemon chiffon cake, Chocolate cherry and almond croustillant and Fruit cake financier.

But it would not be high tea without the British classic -- scones, of course. At Siam Kempinski, they are served plain, raisin and with Valrhona chocolate and are accompanied with Devonshire clotted cream, lemon curd and strawberry jam. I prefer the Devon way of eating my scone, cream first and then jam. This style is a cause of much debate, though. Are you a Devon-style scone person or a Cornwall-style person?

Afternoon tea delivery.

Tea master Nipaporn "Ging" Hanwichai has selected a variety of delicate Ronnefeldt teas that pair well with this special afternoon tea edition.

The "Afternoon Tea at Kempinski – Flavours of the Greatest" takeaway set is served daily (24-hour pre-order) from Sept 1 to Nov 14, and is priced at B1,250 per person, with two servings of Ronnefeldt tea. An additional delivery fee is applied. When dine-in opens, the tea will be served from 2-5pm in the lobby lounge and Hanuman Bar and will be priced at B990++ per person.
