'A special place' - Gareth Bale and Jose Mourinho hold phone conversation ahead of proposed Tottenham transfer

Gareth Bale has now spoken to Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho about a possible return to his former club, his agent has revealed.

Bale is seemingly closing in on a sensational return to the club he left for Real Madrid back in 2013, with a departure from the Spanish capital now looking increasingly likely.

A return to the club that helped launch the 31-year old's glittering career would surely be popular with Spurs fans, and the player himself is believed to be keen on the move.

Bale's outspoken representative Jonathan Barnett has suggested there is still work to be done before a deal is completed., but he revealed a phone conversation had been held between manager and player.

“There’s a long way to go on some issues, but without doubt Gareth is closer to leaving Madrid than at any time in the last seven years,” he told Sky Sports.

"The deal is complicated, but there’s reason to believe a deal is close and things could move very quickly if discussions continue to go well.

”Gareth has spoken to Jose and explained how Spurs have a special place in his heart,” he added

Spurs boss Mourinho refused to discuss the club's interest in the Welshman when he faced the press on Wednesday ahead of his side's Europa League clash with Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

But Barnett claims the pair have already spoken, with Bale given assurances that he will play a big role in the club's future plans.
