Gallery VER reopens with "The Tenebrous Spiral Staircase Of The --", an exhibition that engages viewers in the passage of time to reconnect with their experiences, until Nov 6.
Presented by artist and curator Chitti Kasemkitvatana, the exhibition features an open-ended space that juxtaposes recent events in Thailand's socio-political landscape against a backdrop of Siam's modernisation, overseen by a forgotten contemporary-art duo from the 1980s and the archangel Cassiel from Wim Wenders' movie Faraway, So Close!.
Once entering the gallery, viewers will transform into a director of their own internal play where Cassiel is present as a guide on a dark and precarious staircase. As they move from a white cube to a green-screen room, they are invited to interpret a variety of objects and conjure meaning based on their own experience and background.
The objects include a canvas depicting a collapsed pictorial plane sitting beside a sign in the Ariyaka alphabet right at the centre of the main gallery; veiny river routes flowing chemical blue off in one corner; an artwork as seen in Korean drama Vincenzo; and wax figures of the forgotten artist-duo. The interpretation of these is entirely up to each viewer.
The artist has also created an online tour of the exhibition where viewers can step into the virtual gallery of photos, moving images and journals via instagram.com/journal_spiralstaircase.
Gallery Ver is on Narathiwat Ratchanakharin 22 and opens Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 6pm. The number of visitors is limited to 10 persons per round.
