'A smile that would light up any room' - tributes pour in after Irish toddler tragically dies from rare disease

Tributes have poured in after a brave one-year-old from Offaly lost his battle with a rare illness over the weekend.

Daire McDonnell, from Edenderry, was flown to the UK to get specialist treatment for a rare bowel disease in October.

However, earlier this week his family got the devastating news that he was not well enough to undergo a further procedure needed.

Daire was born with multiple atresia of the bowel and had been undergoing treatment since birth.

Daire was transferred back from the UK to Crumlin Children's Hospital on Friday in order for his brothers to be able to spend time with him before he passed.

His death came after his family reached out to Wicklow singer Dermot Kennedy - whose song 'Outnumbered' had become the soundtrack to Daire's brave fight.

Daire's parents Derval and Vinny had played the song for him throughout his treatment in Ireland and the UK.

Furthermore, friends and supporters played the track at various events and vigils held for Daire in the last year and a half.

On Sunday, Kennedy responded to get in touch with the family.

Tributes poured in on social media to the brave little fighter.

The RARE Ireland Family Support Network said: "Daire had a smile that would light up a room. He was an absolute warrior and fought a huge fight.

"Our hearts are broken for his mother, Derval, father, Vinny, his brother, family, friends and all who knew and love Daire.

"Our thoughts are prayers are with his family at this very sad time. Our candles are lighting for you all tonight.''

A commenter added: "You fought so hard to stay with your family. Fly high with the angels."

"Such a precious, brave and beautiful little man. Though I never knew you, your bravery and fight would put so much of us to shame. Watch over your Mam, Dad and brothers, sleep well angel", added another.
