A Slice of the Moon is about Slim Hannigan and her family who live in Ireland. They are utterly reliant on the growth of their potatoes to take them through the harsh conditions of a famine.
However, when the potatoes do not grow as planned, the Hannigans are forced to leave their homeland and move to Oregon, America. They must start a new life with their Uncle Niall.
Meeting new friends on the ship, most of the family survive the difficult time on the ship, but certain situations prevent them from going to Oregon as planned.
I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of nine, due to its engaging plot, which really hooks the reader’s attention right from the beginning. These are the opening sentences:
It’s a funny thing about the potato. It came to Ireland from America in the first place, and yet, it’s also the very thing that made us leave home and head to the New World.
I am sure the opening makes you want to read on, and if it does, why don’t you?
A Slice of the Moon is definitely one of my favourite books that I have read so far. I really want to read the other books that Sandi Toksvig has written as I believe that they will be as entertaining as this book.
