'A sick act': Vandals damage at least 40 graves at regional NSW cemetery

Police say at least 40 grave sites have been vandalised at Grafton Cemetery.

About 40 headstones have been vandalised at a graveyard on the NSW North Coast in what police describe as a "low and sick act".

Police were called to Grafton Cemetery on Monday morning where officers found smashed headstones, destroyed plaques and scattered broken ornaments.

Chief Inspector Jo Reid hoped a public appeal for information on the force's local Facebook page on Wednesday would assist police to track down the perpetrators.

"We're hoping to see a result on this — one of the lowest things that can happen in a community," she said.

"It's someone's idea of a very sick and low act. It's certainly got the community fired up."

Chief Inspector Reid said police remained confident community tip-offs and possible CCTV footage would enable officers to determine when the incident happened and how many vandals were involved.

Officers have worked with the cemetery managers over the past few days to contact family members whose loved ones' grave sites had been damaged.

Chief Inspector Reid said the vandalism appeared to be indiscriminate and not linked to recent vandalism of historical monuments.

"There's nothing to suggest it's racially motivated, there was no spray paint or anything involved," she said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Grafton Police on 02 6642 0222.

Damaging a cemetery carries fines of up to $4,000 or possible jail time.
