'A shambles': Woman was able to book a Covid test at a site that was actually closed... she got there and found it deserted

A woman who was able to book a coronavirus test at a site that was actually closed has described her experience as a 'shambles'.

She booked online to be tested at a drive-in Covid testing site in Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The first appointment she booked was cancelled by text, but she was able to rebook at the same site for later in the day.

But when she arrived at the site, off Chorley Street, the woman, who asked us to use her first name, Alex, discovered it was completely deserted.

The Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed that the site had to be closed due to adverse weather conditions.

It says text messages were sent out cancelling appointments and advising people to book in alternative locations.

However, Alex says that while she did receive a text cancelling her first appointment, it did not say that the site was closed.

She was able to rebook a test at the same site for an hour after the cancelled test, despite it being closed and was left to wonder what was happening when she arrived at the site, only to find it empty.

She says she spoke to another driver who had also turned up at the closed site after having the same issue.

Alex, who was eventually able to get a test later that day at the Etihad site instead, said: "We got there and it was deserted.

"There were no signs up, it was just an empty car park.

"We were trying to find out what to do, but there's no one to speak to about the drive-in centres.

"When we went to the Etihad you could tell the difference straight away."

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: "The site was temporarily closed due to adverse weather conditions.

"Text messages were sent to those who had booked to redirect them to nearby sites.

“We now have over 750 testing sites in place across the UK and nearly 50 million tests have been carried out, with the vast majority of people reporting no issues with the process.”
