A screening of Iranian classic Leila

TK Park will continue the next programme in the Contemporary World Film Series with Leila, one of the best Iranian films of all time, on Saturday at 4pm.

Directed by one of Iran's most-admired filmmakers, Dariush Meherjui, the 102-minute drama has won over critics and audiences all around the world. It's regarded as an amazing example of how the most intimate of dramas can sometimes be portrayed with insight and intensity, minus sexually explicit scenes or physical action. This is the hallmark of Iran's austere but world-renowned cinema.

The story revolves around Leila and Reza, a deeply-in-love married couple who come from modern, upper-class families. When Leila learns that she is unable to conceive, her husband is okay with it, but not his mother.

She convinces Leila that it is her duty to allow her husband to remarry (permissible by Muslim law). Leila is disturbed but agrees to it, much to his confusion. When he does marry again, they realise that it affects both of them much more than they expected.

This is a woman-oriented film, which is not very common within Iranian cinema. Actress Leila Hatami is outstanding in the title role. (Her 2011 Oscar-winning film A Separation made this Iranian artiste world-famous.) She is ably supported by the marvelous actor Ali Mosaffa, who plays her husband. Their masterful performances make this stark and simple domestic drama totally riveting.

The film has a Persian soundtrack with English subtitles and suitable for those aged no less than 16. The screening is supported by the Iranian Embassy in Bangkok which will serve a variety of Iranian snacks and tea after the show.

Entry fee is 20 baht. Seats are limited and reservations should be made via Google Forms. TK Park is on the 8th floor, Zone D of CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Road.
