A school is closed due to 'severe flooding' and children are jumping for joy

A Manchester school will be closed on Friday due to 'severe flooding'.

Manchester Health Academy, a secondary school on Moor Road in Wythenshawe, posted a message to all parents and guardians on social media to advise them of the closure at around 6pm last night.

It read: "UNFORTUNATELY MANCHESTER HEALTH ACADEMY WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW, FRIDAY 12TH JULY 2019, DUE TO SEVERE FLOODING.PLEASE SHARE."

The cause of the flooding was not immediately clear, but the school later gave the M.E.N a statement confirming it was due to heavy rain.

Parts of south Manchester, Stockport and Cheshire experienced heavy thunderstorms last night.

Manchester Health Academy was due to hold its school sports day on Friday.

Reacting to the school's post on Facebook, some parents said their children were relieved.

Jennie Broadhurst wrote: "Well my son was jumping around like a right loon when I told him there's no school. He's happy he doesn't have to do sports day lol."

"Kids will be fuming," added Dylan Evans.

Kevin Green, Principal Manchester Health Academy, said in a statement: "Parts of the school building were flooded last night as a result of the heavy rain.

"School is closed to pupils today whilst we fully assess the situation because it affected a number of classrooms.

"We intend to re-open the school as soon as possible."
