OAKLAND, Calif. _ Billy Butler arrived at the A's clubhouse Sunday to learn that he'd been released by the club.
The veteran DH has had two sub-par seasons since signing a three-year deal with the A's after the 2014 season.
Last month he got into a fight with teammate Danny Valencia, an altercation in which most of the club sided with Valencia.
The A's will still owe Butler $10 million for the 2017 season.
Butler, 30, was batting .276 with four home runs and 31 RBIs in 85 games this season. In two seasons with the A's, he hit .258 with 19 home runs and 96 RBIs in 236 games.
