A's rally past Astros, 4-3

OAKLAND, Calif._The Oakland A's (42-52) trailed 3-0 entering the seventh inning before coming back to force extra innings and beat the Houston Astros for the second straight night.

The game-winning rally started with two outs when Marcus Semien singled and stole second base. Yonder Alonso walked and Reddick hit a slow grounder that forced Houston shortstop Carlos Correa to range deep into the hole.

Semien followed third base coach Ron Washington's somewhat curious call to head home and Correa may have been surprised. His throw was off line, and Semien scored the winning run to secure the 4-3 win.

Dillon Overton acquitted himself nicely in his third big league start and the A's found some late offense to force extra innings on Tuesday night before winning.

Stephen Vogt and Coco Crisp ripped back-to-back, one-out doubles off Astros closer Will Harris to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth and force extras.

The A's might've had a chance to win in the ninth, but Crisp was tagged out between second and third base after incredulously breaking into a trot after crossing second base.

Overton, who arrived in Oakland a day earlier, was officially recalled to the roster Tuesday to make the start. He grinded through a rough first inning to post a zero, then was solid while tossing a career-high 61/3 innings and allowing three runs and nine hits.

When he left the game, the A's were still being shut out by Houston's Dallas Keuchel, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner.

But Oakland finally got to Keuchel in the seventh inning. Billy Butler singled with one out and Jake Smolinski chased Keuchel when he doubled to deep right field.

Ryon Healy greeted Astros reliever Ken Giles by doubling into the right-center to cut the lead to 3-2. Crisp added a two-out single, but Giles stranded runners at the corners to end the inning.

The A's also put two men on in the eighth inning when Semien and Alonso drew back-to-back two out walks against former A's reliever Luke Gregerson. But Reddick flew out as a pinch hitter to end the inning.

Overton was pitching in the big leagues for the first time since getting roughed up last month by the Giants, who tagged him for eight runs in three innings. He was brought back up to start for Sean Manaea, who was called into emergency duty Sunday when starter Rich Hill and long reliever Andrew Triggs were injured in the first inning.

Overton needed 30 pitches to get through the first inning, despite retiring the first two batters, and then got into some more trouble in the third inning.

Marwin Gonzalez singled and Jose Altuve doubled with one out before Overton saved a run with his glove. Correa hit a little dribbler that Overton grabbed and flipped home from the glove to get Gonzalez for the second out.

Still, Houston got on the board first a pitch later when Luis Valbuena lined a single that made it 1-0 Astros.

Houston added to its lead when George Springer led off the fifth inning with a soaring home run just to the right of dead center field. Altuve followed with a one-out triple and scored on a Correa sacrifice fly.

Overton finished up his night on a strong note, though, pitching a scoreless sixth inning and retiring the first batter in the seven before giving way to Daniel Coulombe, who, like Overton, was recalled from Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday.

_A's manager Bob Melvin said it's still "too early to tell" how long Hill will be out after leaving Sunday's start after five pitchers with a blister.

"It's probably going to be a few days before we have any kind of inclination of when he's going to play catch and then potentially start again," Melvin said.

The A's would like to avoid placing him on the disabled list, if at all possible. At this point, the hope is to get the skin to dry up enough to possibly shave down some of the blister and then strengthen the skin.

_Triggs was also injured in the first inning of that same game when he took a line drive off his left calf and he was placed on the disabled list Tuesday, making room on the roster for Overton.

Being down a starter in Hill and losing their long reliever in Triggs, the A's needed to add an additional arm and recalled Coulombe for the fifth time this season. Tyler Ladendorf was optioned to Triple-A to correspond, leaving the A's with just three bench players.

_Catcher Josh Phegley resumed some baseball activities Tuesday by swinging a bat and playing some catch and he returns from knee surgery. Melvin said he's "on schedule. Not really sure what we're looking at as far as when we're going to get him out on a rehab assignment yet, but it's good that he is starting baseball activities."
