OAKLAND, Calif. _ Khris Davis supplied all the offense Sunday as the Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1 and completed what they hope is a homestand so successful it can jump-start their season.
Davis drove in all four runs with two outs, grounding a single to left in the first inning to bring home one run and then launching a three-run home run off David Price (1-1) in the bottom of the eighth to break up a 1-1 game before a crowd of 29,804.
It gave the Athletics a series win against a Boston team which came in with a 17-2 record. The A's began the home stand with a sweep of the Chicago White Sox, and by winning five of six games, evened their record at 11-11 for the season.
The homestand included not only Sean Manaea's no-hitter Saturday night, but a memorable 50th anniversary win Tuesday night, which fans were let in for free and there was no charge for parking.
Blake Treinen was the winning pitcher in relief and was preceded by starter Daniel Mengden, Yusmeiro Petit and Ryan Buchter before coming on in the eighth inning.
The A's took a 1-0 lead against Price in the first inning courtesy of Davis, who drove home Marcus Semien. Semien opened the inning with a double to left, advanced to third on a ground out by Stephen Piscotty and remained there after a Jed Lowrie struck out looking.
Davis was next, and grounded a single to left to drive in the run.
It stayed that way until the seventh, when the Red Sox finally got to Mengden to tie the score.
Mitch Moreland opened with a solid single to right center, with Rafael Devers hitting a one-bounce single in front of left fielder Chad Pinder. Blake Swihart was next, and his chopper in front of the plate turned in to a force at third as catcher Bruce Maxwell threw to Matt Chapman.
Boston second baseman Brock Holt chased Mengden with an RBI double to right, sending runners to second third. It was then that Petit, in his first game back since going to Venezuela for a family medical emergency, kept the score 1-1 by getting Ramon Vasquez to foul out and striking out Tzu-Wei Lin.
Next up for the A's is a nine-game, three-city road trip against Texas, Houston and Seattle before returning home to face the Baltimore Orioles on May 4.
