A's call up catcher Bruce Maxwell

OAKLAND, Calif. _ The A's placed catcher Stephen Vogt on family medical leave Saturday and selected hot-hitting Bruce Maxwell from their Triple-A Nashville farm club.

Maxwell, 25, was batting .321 with 10 homers and 41 RBIs in 60 games with the Sounds. The left-handed hitting catcher was also hitting .643 (19 for 28) with five home runs and 16 RBIs over his last eight games before being called up. Maxwell had thrown out 30 of 77 would-be base-stealers (39 percent) at Nashville.

Maxwell was a 2012 second-round draft pick of the A's with a selection acquired in a trade with Minnesota for veteran outfielder Josh Willingham. He was expected to be in Oakland's starting lineup Saturday against Tampa Bay for his major league debut.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Maxwell, the A's moved right-handed relief pitcher Fernando Rodriguez (strained right shoulder) to the 60-day disabled list.

The reason for Vogt's leave, or its length, was not released.
