The A's activated Sonny Gray from the disabled list Wednesday morning, clearing him to make one final start Wednesday before the Oakland season ends.
Gray will get one inning, possibly two, in the series finale in Anaheim, Calif. On Wednesday against the Angels, his first start since Aug. 6. He's been recovering from a right forearm strain since then, the second time on the disabled list for him this season.
Once Gray is done Wednesday, the A's are expected to turn the game over to left-hander to Ross Detwiler, the left-hander whose start day normally would have been Wednesday.
Nominally the A's ace, Gray is 5-11 with a 5.74 ERA in 21 starts when he hasn't been on the disabled list. Gray has the third-lowest winning percentage in the American League at .313 and his ERA is fourth among pitchers with 100 or more innings pitched.
He was on the DL May 21-June 4 with a strained right trapezius, was reinstated June 5, but never recovered his usual sharpness. Eventually he landed on the disabled list again on Aug. 7, the day after his forearm discomfort got to him.
The A's have been pointing to this return, but they have been clear that Gray won't be allowed to throw many pitches because the club doesn't want to take any chance with the health of its ace.
