A revamped play area in Mayhill, Swansea, has been covered in graffiti less than a year after it reopened

A revamped children's play area in Swansea has been vandalised with graffiti scrawled on almost every new piece of equipment. The brand new facilities were installed at Mayhill Park towards the end of last year, with upgrades including swings, a slide, a 25 metre cableway, a wheelchair-friendly roundabout and lots more equipment.

It was one of more than 60 play areas being revamped with nearly £4 million being invested by the council. But people living nearby were in disbelief to see how badly it had been defaced whilst walking through the area earlier this week.

Permanent marker etchings have been left on equipment reading things like: "Bad kids", "out of service", "Be careful might pass out", "Welcome to playtime" and "Welcome please take your children here". Broken glass and rubbish has also been dumped there. Get Swansea stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

Carl Mayo, a member of the committee at Mayhill Community Centre, reported the matter to South Wales Police and Swansea Council. He said: "There's anti-social behaviour in the park, and the way that things are going, there's going to be no park left for anybody."

Swansea Council cabinet member for community services, Cyril Anderson, said: "Vandalism and graffiti at any of our parks is disgraceful and we’d urge anyone with information about who did it to report to police. The new facilities at Mayhill were introduced last year at the request of residents and they have been warmly welcomed by children and families. We are removing the graffiti as quickly as possible."

A police spokeswoman added: " South Wales Police was called around 00:40am on Monday, August 1 following reports of damage at the Mayhill MUGA on Mayhill Road.

"Officers would like to hear from anyone who may have information that could assist them in their investigation. You can contact South Wales Police via: https://bit.ly/SWPProvideInfo quoting occurrence number 2200257030."
