The Governor General David Hurley was on hand at Newcastle City Hall on Friday to mark the completion of $20 million of works to the historic building's facade.
Mr Hurley addressed the ceremony held in front of the refurbished building, and unveiled a commemorative plaque alongside his wife Linda Hurley and Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes.
The festivities also included performances from the Australian Army Band Newcastle, the Marching Koalas youth marching band and the University of Newcastle Choir.
Repairs to the exterior of the 92-year-old city hall began with trial works in 2009. They were completed in three stages and included improvements to the clock tower and the building's iconic sandstone facade - some of which had to be hand-completed by stonemasons.
