Windsor has united to remember Prince Philip as last-minute preparations were taking place ahead of his funeral.
The parish council has tied 99 black ribbons around the lampposts on the main road and commissioned a floral public tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh.
But local leaders again warned royal fans not to travel to the palace for the procession and to instead pay their respects from home given the current rules around social distancing.
Old Windsor councillor Lynne Jones said: “It will be an understated affair on Saturday.
“I think everyone wants to show their support for the royal family at this time and it is very hard to think that we can’t do that in the traditional way.
“But no long journeys should be taken in to Windsor for the funeral.
“There is not going to be anything to see and it would be much better to watch on television.”
Windsor resident David Smith said: “Prince Philip obviously lived to a great age but he was such a part of British society it feels strange that he’s gone.
“The atmosphere in the town has definitely changed since his death... there is a real sense of loss.”
John Story, mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor, asked people not to gather in the town, adding: “We recommend that you pay your respects from the safety of your own home.”
