A race for cancer awareness at Mahalaxmi Racecourse this Sunday

MUMBAI: The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) will host a race called ‘‘Race of Hope Gold Cup,’ to support the Indian Cancer Society’s (ICS) unique initiative to create cancer awareness, at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse on Sunday. A race for Class IV horses has 12 runners in the fray.

ICS has requested cancer survivors, who are part of the mutual support survivors group UGAM, to take part in this event and inspire all with their performances and fighting spirit. A live band will entertain the gathering. Products made by cancer survivors and victors will be available for sale. Kids below 18 years of age will have free entry and there will be many fun activities for them. The donation pass (eligible for tax benefits- 80 G) for entry will be Rs.999/- per person.

ICS will also offer, as a part of the event, free screening camp for oral, breast and cervical cancer. ICS’s efforts aim to create positivity and encourage people to avoid cancer causing substances, adopt a healthy lifestyle and undergo screening to help early detection. Most cancers, if detected early, can be treated effectively leading to cure. The ‘Stay Two Steps Ahead of Cancer’ campaign of ICS urges people to minimize risks of cancer.

Talking about the event, Shiven Surendranath, committee member RWITC, said: ‘Race of Hope’ event is an important event for us at RWITC and would like to support Indian Cancer Society to create the required awareness in a unique and engaging way. We at RWITC are very happy to be a part of this initiative of the Indian Cancer Society.

Mrs. Usha Thorat, Managing Trustee of ICS said, “The increasing incidence of cancer in our country imposes a huge emotional and financial burden on the patients and their families. To reduce the incidence of cancer, its mortality and morbidity, ICS has rolled out many campaigns and projects from awareness, screening and patient support through and after cancer. Among many the ‘Race of Hope’ is a key initiative and we expect it will only get bigger from here.”
