A quick guide to Hvar

Dance all night

This island, set in sparkling waters off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, the newest member of the EU, attracts the international yacht set as much as the hoi polloi. Most of the action centres around the town of Hvar, where the most venerable – and raucous – late-night institution is Carpe Diem, which has a sister venue, Carpe Diem beach located on a small private island. Hula-Hula Bar a short walk from the harbour is where the beautiful people hang out, making the most of the daily sun down parties and beach service on offer. More popular with locals and tourists on a budget is Veneranda Club. If you can make it until sunrise, the views over the harbour are stunning. If not, head to the nearby Ka'Lavanda for a classy old-town cocktail and great music.

Making waves

You won't go far down the beach in Hvar without seeing the locals trying to stop a tennis ball from bouncing into the surf. This is the local sport of picigin, a waterfront cross between volleyball and water polo, whose aim is the keep the ball out of the sea as long as possible. The more traditional water sports are sailing, sea-kayaking, wind-surfing and diving. Snorkelling in such clear waters is delightful, but for those who wish to head deeper, the rocky outcrops near Hvar have been a ships' graveyard for centuries, making this a great place for scuba-diving on wrecks. Many companies offer beginners' courses; experienced divers should obtain a licence before going down.

Don't miss …

The islands of the Pakleni archipelago rise out of the water opposite the town of Hvar like the humps of a sea monster, but are an oasis of calm, linked to the mainland by regular water taxi services. Bathe in seclusion, or head to the beach bar on Parmigiana to sip cold drinks under an olive tree. Boats can also be hired to make the short trip under your own steam, while adventurous travellers can get there by hired sea kayak, in which they can extend their trip around the glorious coastline, or simply hop from one perfect tiny island to another.

Book your Hvar trip at expedia.co.uk. Prices start from £256 per person for three nights.
