A pub's fruit machine cash box went missing. Then staff found this really suspicious bit of CCTV footage...

A suspected thief was caught on camera suspiciously walking away from a raided pub fruit machine with his hoody bulging as his confused looking pal wiped down his pint glass.

The CCTV footage from The Witchwood in Ashton-under-Lyne was shared on social media on Monday after staff discovered machine had been forced open and the metal cash box containing notes stolen.

It shows a man in a black tracksuit heading away from the fruity at the rear of the boozer with what appears to be a large object stuffed inside his hoody.

He signals to his pal - who is holding two pints - to leave and walks out through the front door.

The other man, wearing a striped Adidas tracksuit, starts to follow before realising he still has the beer.

He turns back to the table, then back to his friend in a puzzled manner, then places the glasses on a table in front of him.

Bizarrely, he pulls down his sleeves and appears to wipe down the full pint of any fingerprints, before picking the other drink back up and heading out the front door.

Pub owner Tommy Ireland posted the video - along with several others - on The Witchwood's Facebook in a bid to try and identify the two men.

"It happened about 12pm - we'd just opened, they were the only ones in there," he told the Manchester Evening News .

Tommy explained that the fruit machine had been forced open, and that the note box inside stolen.

He believes whoever was responsible had a knowledge of gambling machines and how they worked.

"It only took them five minutes," he added.

"We saw three of them on camera, looking in windows before we opened. I reckon they were scouting the place out, seeing what machines we had.

"When we opened the door they were stood across the road and two of them came straight in."

The footage - which the MEN has had to blur for legal reasons - has been viewed on social media thousands of times however Tommy is yet to receive a name, leading him to believe the men are from outside the area.

He is now warning other pubs in Greater Manchester to be on their guard against thieves.

A spokesman for GMP confirmed they were called to the pub on Old Street on Monday afternoon following reports of criminal damage and theft of money from a gambling machine.

Officers have a copy of the CCTV, and enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously.
