'A proper European cup group' - Liverpool fans react after Champions League draw

Liverpool have learned their three group stage opponents after the Champions League draw took place on Thursday evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been placed in Group B, alongside Atletico Madrid, Porto, and AC Milan.

The Reds’ campaign to win their seventh European Cup will get underway on September 14-15, with the final group games taking place on December 7-8.

Having been reunited with their most famous opponents in Champions League history - as well as Atletico Madrid and former champions Porto - Liverpool supporters shared their thoughts on the group across social media:

On that famous night in Istanbul in 2005, Liverpool overcame a three-goal half-time deficit through Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso.

Forcing the game into extra time and then penalties, it was Jerzy Dudek who proved to be the hero, saving Andriy Shevchenko’s decisive spot kick.

Coincidentally, the two sides have only met twice before in their history, with the other meeting coming in the 2007 final, where Milan recorded a 2-1 win.

Luis Suarez ’s Atletico are a team that will hold recent bad memories for Reds fans, with Diego Simeone’s side responsible for knocking the team out of the competition in 2020.

However, Atleti’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium was also the setting for Liverpool’s sixth European Cup win in 2019.

Their English rivals also learned their opponents, with Manchester City drawn against Lionel Messi’s PSG, RB Leipzig, and Club Brugge.

Reigning champions Chelsea will face off against Juventus, Zenit St. Petersburg, and Malmo, as Thomas Tuchel’s side begin their defence of the trophy.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will play their Europa League final opponents Villarreal, Atalanta, and BSC Young Boys.

The road to the final in St. Petersburg gets started in less than a month’s time and the Reds will have hopes of building on their recent European success.

Despite suffering an extensive injury crisis, the team made it to the quarter final stages against Real Madrid last season.

With the squad now nearing full-strength, Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to reclaim the trophy that Jordan Henderson lifted, two years ago.
