‘A privilege to see him play’ - Leeds United fans issue emotional Terry Cooper tributes

Tributes have flooded in following the death of Leeds United legend Terry Cooper at the age of 77.

A mainstay of Don Revie’s famous Whites side, he made 351 appearances for the club and won 20 caps for England as a result of his performances at club level.

Cooper was just 19 when he made his Leeds debut, and did so on a momentous day in the history of the club.

He appeared in a win over Swansea Town in 1964, a victory which clinched promotion to the First Division.

Revie converted Cooper from a winger to a full-back and he consequently went on to earn a reputation as an exciting, marauding defender.

Cooper was integral to the First Division triumph of 1969, as well as the Fairs Cup victories in 1968 and 1971.

Between the Fairs Cup wins, he helped Leeds lift the Charity Shield and was key as the Whites reached the final of the FA Cup.

After leaving Elland Road in 1975, he represented Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Doncaster Rovers, before eventually hanging up his boots and stepping into management.

He would go on to take charge of former clubs Bristol Rovers and Bristol City, as well as Exeter City across two spells and Birmingham City.

Cooper’s passing marks another sad loss of a member of Revie’s squad, coming less than a month after the death of former Leeds midfielder Mick Bates.

The club have also mourned the loss of Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Trevor Cherry and Peter Lorimer within the last two years.

Cooper was present at the centenary celebrations in 2019 and a video of his touching embrace with former teammate Norman Hunter was shared on social media last night.

Social media has been awash with tributes to Cooper, who helped the club capture the imagination of supporters during its glory years under Revie.
