A private social club could be opening in Bensham if plans are approved

A private social club could be opening its doors to a select clientele in Bensham if it is approved by the local authority.

John Hayden has applied for planning permission to open the exclusive watering hole on Coatsworth Road in a shop building.

A design and access statement submitted by his agent John Straughan reassured the authority that the premises, which will be called 'The Fishers Club', would be a "quiet social club for older male and female members to meet and relax without noisy music".

The membership list would be restricted to 20 people, with no members under the age of 21, and an expected average attendance of 10 members.

Users of the club will be expected to follow a list of rules including no standing on the pavement, no vaping inside, no parking outside, and no gambling, music or dancing.

If the scheme is given the go ahead the club would be open 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 11pm during the week, on Saturdays it would be open 1pm to 11.30pm and Sundays 7pm to 10.30pm.

The document said that the plans will breathe new life into the building and "move its use into the future".

It added: "The alterations and improvements would bring new and extended life to the building and move the use in to the future."

Gateshead Council will decide on the application by July 31.
