A prankster conned an Asda worker into announcing 'Tesco is cheaper' over the PA system

A prankster conned an Asda worker into making an announcement to the entire supermarket on the PA system proclaiming that 'Tesco's is cheaper'.

Michael Bidgood, 29, from Swinton, was inside Asda's Trafford Park supermarket when he pulled his prank, calling the branch from his mobile and persuading a member of staff to put a call out to his wife.

He told his victim his wife's first name was 'Tess' and she had a double-barreled surname 'Cosis-Chippa', spelling it and explaining the name was South African.

The unfortunate member of staff then put out a booming alert over the PA system, saying: "This is a customer announcement. Can Tess Cosis-Chippa please come to the customer service desk."

But it sounded very much like Asda was admitting that 'Tesco's is cheaper'.

Michael, a traffic management worker, posted the clip on Facebook and it was shared hundreds of times.

"Belter that mate," replied Tom Grey, who was among dozens of people who appreciated Michael's work.

And it seems even his poor victim saw the funny side.

Michael, a married father, told the M.E.N: "I could not stop laughing. I go in there every day for my lunch because I'm working on the new tram stop.

"As we were leaving, this lady shouted at us to come over and we had a laugh about it. I heard 'excuse me' and she came over and shook my hand saying 'you got me a good one'. She found it hilarious."

Michael was at first unaware his pal was filming the episode but then decided to go along with it.

"I didn't think it would get so many views and likes," he said.

Michael set up his victim by telling her that he had found car keys, which he claimed he had lost earlier, beside the vehicle, and persuaded her to put out an announcement for his wife so he didn't have to search for her.

Although the Asda staff thought it was hilarious, the bosses were a little more serious about the gag.

A spokesman for the supermarket giant said: "As cheeky as this little prank was, when it comes to being cheaper, winning the Grocer 33 price award for the last 21 years running is all our customers need to know."
