A police officer needed surgery after detaining a suspected thief on Market Street

A police officer is in hospital undergoing surgery after being injured while making an arrest in Manchester city centre.

The officer was seriously injured while detaining a male for theft on Market Street on Friday, Greater Manchester Police said.

The extent of his injuries have not been revealed.

His colleagues in the GMP city centre team have thanked NHS staff for taking care of him during the coronavirus pandemic.

Officers said the incident is: “A stark reminder of the risks our officers take on a daily basis.”

A post shared on the GMP Manchester City Centre Facebook page reads: “Our thoughts are with a colleague today who is undergoing surgery having suffered serious injuries whilst detaining a male for theft on Market Street in the city centre yesterday.

“A stark reminder of the risks our officers take on a daily basis.

“A huge thank you to our friends in the NHS for taking care of him and providing such an amazing service at the most testing of times.”
