A pointless late foul in Celtics’ Game 2 win led to an awful bad beat for Pacers bettors

It wasn’t just an awful night for the Indiana Pacers in their Game 2 loss to the Boston Celtics.

It was also pretty bad for anyone who bet on the Pacers and a minus-7.5-point spread.

My colleague Andy Nesbitt broke down the final minute of the game in which the Celtics were down two and somehow WON by eight. It started with a Jayson Tatum three off a block on the other end followed by a wide-open Gordon Hayward layup. But that only put the Celtics up by three with 12.1 seconds left.

So how the heck did it end up with the Celtics beating the spread in those 12 seconds!? It started with Wes Matthews …

… Followed by this Tatum play.

Another turnover resulted in the Celtics being up 97-91 with 5.7 seconds left. Again, Pacers bettors were safe at that point. All Boston had to do is dribble out the clock.

But that’s not what happened. With 3.6 seconds remaining, the Pacers’ Tyreke Evans fouled Hayward, who made both of his free throws.

Oof.
