If you enjoy reading poetry and want to improve your writing skills, don’t miss out on this exclusive masterclass with Michael Rosen, one of the UK’s most-loved and most prolific poets. Over the course of the day, you’ll write a variety of poems, some triggered by published works, others by interrogating your own life experiences.

During the class, you’ll learn new strategies for both reading and writing poetry. Plus you’ll receive lots of advice on how to foster the habit of writing, as well as a few expert tips on publishing and performing your poetry. The day includes plenty of writing exercises and opportunities for feedback in a supportive group environment.

Content

  • A close look at a range of different poems – from classic to contemporary poetry
  • Writing exercises linked to some of the poems provided during the class
  • The writing process – tricks and techniques you can apply to your own work
  • Reading poetry – and how reading widely can help you to become a better writer
  • Getting into the habit of writing – what are the best activities and habits for fostering creativity?
  • Opportunities to share your work in a supportive group environment and receive feedback from Michael
  • Getting your work out there – advice on everything from resources and venues, to publishing and performing
  • Plenty of Q&A and group discussion

Class preparation

  • Ahead of the class, you’re encouraged to provide details of at least one poet or poem you’ve enjoyed reading or listening to
  • You’re also encouraged to submit one poem that you have written, along with an accompanying note explaining why you wrote it. If relevant, please also mention if you’ve published or read this poem at a venue, and if so, what kinds of comments you received
  • Please email the above to masterclasses.support@theguardian.com by Friday 22 April, 4pm. Or, if you sign up after this date, as soon as you can after you’ve bought your ticket
