'A Pishmire and a Hoolet' Scots share their favourite animal names and the results are brilliant

A Scottish artist has asked people for their favourite Scots language names for animals and the responses are brilliant.

Artist Stewart Bremner, who creates artwork based on Scottish culture on his indy prints page, saw hundreds of fantastic replies to his "Yer favourite Scots language animal name. Go!" tweet.

Following the deluge of tweets, Stewart, who ended up with scores of names for different beasties, thanked everyone for their excellent repsonses.

By far the most popular choice was the humble earwig which had more than a few Scots names ranging from clipshear to forkie tail and even horny gollach.

Some more top examples included Bubbly Jock for a male turkey, map map for a rabbit, and cushie doo for a wood pigeon.

Some offerings were a bit more intriguing such as foggy bummer for a bumble bee, papingo for a parrot, pishmire for an ant and bum clock for a flying beetle.

Stewart said that he was totally surprised by the sheer volume of responses.

When asked what his favourites were, he said: "It's really hard to pick, there are so many great names. Hoolet and foggie bummer are calling out to me though."

The popular artist said the idea sprung from a book launch for author Laura Waddel, where someone was talking about turning over stones to find what's under them, he said: "Suddenly I thought of slaters (known as woodlice outwith Scotland). I realised I grew up with the word, which was one of the few Scots words I had back then."

He stated that he then wanted to find out more Scots words for animals and though asking Scottish Twitter for theirs would be fun.

He then explained that he intends to use some of his favourite responses as inspiration for new artwork.
