The largest opposition group in Venezuela nominated academic Corina Yoris as María Corina Machado's replacement to head Plataforma Unida's candidacy in this summer's presidential elections.

At a press conference, Machado, who was disqualified from running for public office by Venezuela's Supreme Court of Justice for 15 years, announced that Yoris will replace her in the Democratic United Platform (PUD), the main opposition group to the ruling Maduro, for the July elections.

"We have found a person of my total confidence, honorable, who has the respect of all those who have known her throughout her academic, professional and human life," Machado said at the press conference.

Yoris, president of the Venezuelan Society of Philosophy and a prominent member of the Inter-American Philosophy Network, is a recognized academic and teacher. She is also known for promoting voting in her country.

"I thank Maria Corina," Yoris said. "I feel proud, with the conviction that we all want to rebuild the country."

Under an agreement among the main opposition groups, Yoris will also represent the Mesa de Unidad Democrática (MUD) and Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT), two parties that are currently undisturbed by the Maduro regime.

In recent days, the Maduro regime has escalated its crackdown on the opposition, culminating in the arrest of two prominent operatives associated with Machado's movement.

Back in 2023, Machado clinched a resounding victory in a primary election conducted by an opposition faction.

However, come January, the nation's Supreme Court upheld an administrative ruling barring the 56-year-old former legislator from seeking public office for a staggering 15-year period.

Machado asserted her commitment to press on with her nationwide campaign efforts and pursue official approval for her candidacy.

During today's press briefing, Machado reiterated her determination to push forward with her campaign across the nation and secure her candidacy status.

According to nomination regulations, political parties retain the option to replace their candidates up to ten days before the presidential election.
